Black is my default because it removes one conversation. It lets the day begin before I have explained myself to the wardrobe. A black coat, black trousers, a shirt with a collar that knows what it is doing: these are not a capsule wardrobe.
Burgundy is the disruption. It is not quite red, which is part of its appeal. It suggests that I made a decision but leaves the decision deniable.
Then there is the irrational purchase: a small bag with a shape that is inconvenient and a handle that has never met a practical requirement. I bought it because it looked like it was carrying a secret.
Clothes have an emotional function before they have a social one. They can create distance, give a day an entrance, or make it possible to leave the house when the self feels unfinished.
